This was interesting.  There are two firsts involved in this encounter. It’s the first pre-planned date. I met the girl in question a few weeks ago at an alumni event for my college.  I normally don’t bother with these things, but figured I had nothing better to do. And I did meet her there, so it wasn’t a total waste.

It is also the first time that there was no involvement of alcohol. I felt like I needed to redeem myself in my own eyes a bit. I went for the coffee-date. Drinking on a Monday reeks of alcoholism…or yeah know hating Mondays (who doesn’t hate Mondays?).  So we hung out a coffee shop and talked, really getting to know one another. We bonded over mutual college memories of bad roommates, and worse professors. It helped that she was in the same program as me, and had plenty of the same professors being a graduating class apart.  We had a nice time and after a few hours talking until close (I could tell the worker’s were getting annoyed that we spent so much time there…and might have abused the free refill policy).

So I did the nice, sweet-guy walk her home thing. It’s funny, no matter how many times I’ve gone on first dates, you never feel more like a high school boy then you do when you walk a girl to her door and have the awkward little moment. You all know where I’m coming from. The small talk, the awkward pauses. You both know what’s about to happen, but the guy just has to put it off a little to build up the ol’ courage (which is why alcohol usually helps).  But I did it and I’ll say this. There weren’t exactly fireworks, but there wasn’t exactly a barrage of homicidal tongue either. It was nice, but not too nice.
