I met this bird at the bookstore. She was thumbing through Hemingway with a Woody Allen book already in her hand. Not even having to lie about it, I immediately tell her they are two of my favorites. Naturally, she thought I was using a line. Which I kinda, sorta was, but I was also telling the truth. I proceeded to say this to her, but she was having none of it. She decides to test me out, to see if I’m for real. So she asks me my favorite Hemingway book was. I immediately tell her that it is Garden of Eden, and how I thought it was surprisingly ahead of it’s time and weren’t expecting the forwardness of the guy’s wife wanting “to be the boy” within the first fifteen pages.
She looked at me. Dead eyes and a silent stare, and then proceeded to grab the book and thumb through it to see if I was correct. At this moment I knew I had her. She apologized, and we both laughed about it.
I asked if she had seen The Purple Rose of Cairo, and she hadn’t. That was all I needed to lock the date down. She came over, I had a cheap bottle of wine lying around. And that was that really. She seemed really cool, and a nice sort of girlfriend type. But these days I’m not looking for a girl to read next to, or to watch Woody Allen movies with. Sure, I’ve never done this with actual girlfriends, but it’s the goal of life isn’t it? I was content to spend two hours until I walked out of the reel of her life.
