I met B while I was at Bartending School a few years ago. We bonded over a 40-hour week of making Malibu Bay breezes, Alabama Slammers, and Incredible Hulks. She was my hipster fantasy. She wore leggings under a cute dress, had a love for any band that you most definitely never heard of, and had an inner quirk that made Zooey Dechannel jealous. But I had a girlfriend at the time. This was even in decline of the relationship. But, despite my best temptations, I didn’t cheat or end the relationship over her. I just pined.
And then I got single, and she got relationshipped. Rinse and repeat this pattern for a few years, but we kept in touch. We finally hung out yesterday for the first time in a few years. We reminisced over our teacher yelling at us, over her busting my balls, over the weird kids in class. It was a fun time.. We tried a bunch of drinks that we always used to grill each other on back in our good ol’ school days that were only a week and the basis of our bonding.
Before I know it, we’re on a Brooklyn Bound F train barely able to stand, falling over each other. And then we had one of those kisses that you just fall into. And then we pulled apart, and fell all over again. Before I know it we are aggressively making out in the deserted third car at three in the morning. I’ve had many a subway ride and many an indie girl come in to my life, but it was the deadest and most alive subway trip of my life. And after what felt like twenty seconds we were back at her cramped studio apartment.
Years ago when I visited, she served me amazing pesto and apologized for the mess. Now, it was even messier, but there was no pesto. The only tasty sensation was the freshly pressed peppermint breath after a quick dart to the bathroom when she walked back out in something more comfortable.
